إذا كنت لاتعرف نوع الملف مثلاً هل هو ملف صوتي أو صور أو وورد أو فلاش أو غيرها فإنك ستجد صعوبه في فتحه وبالتالي لابد من معرفة نوع الملف لكي تستطيع فتحه بإستخدام البرنامج المخصص له .

يمكن معرفة نوع الملف بالضغط على الملف بزر الفأره الأيمن وإختيار خصائص وسيظهر لك نوع الملف .


وفائدته أيضاُ حينما تريد البحث بكمبيوترك عن ملفات الوورد مثلاً ففي خاصية البحث سيسهل عليك ذلك حينما تكتب امتداد الملف وهو *.DOC فستظهر لك جميع الملفات الخاصة بهذا البرنامج وكذلك مع كل البرامج الاخرى
